Remembering Major Singh Jawanda

Known and recognised for this community spirit, Major spent his childhood growing up in the Punjab, in India where he first learnt how to cook at the age of 14. He spent most of his time outdoors, in a huge garden which had a large tandoor oven that his family would share with other villagers. From spicy curries and tasty samosas, to fragrant rice and vegetable pakoras - Major was passionate about learning the secrets of making authentic Punjabi Indian food.

In 1968, Major moved to the West Midlands to work inside a foundry. Then, in 1981, he learned how to make Punjabi sweets and successfully opened up the well-known Lakshmi Sweet Centre & Restaurant in Wolverhampton; the speciality on the menu was the authentic tandoori chicken cooked in the restaurant’s tandoor oven, just like during his childhood.

He touched so many hearts over the years, and in honour of Major Singh Jawanda’s wishes, Lakshmi’s still remains open to serve the local community in his memory. If you had the privilege of meeting Major you will know that he was a kind, loving, caring and giving soul, therefore we continue his passion, to this present day, into our food and services.
